OUGD502 - Studio Brief 01 - Abstract Documentary

I've just completed the Documentary series Abstract on Netflix and found it one of the best documentaries I have ever watched. Abstract focuses on the lives and ideas of creatives, showing the effort and hard work in the design process behind every idea which is brought to life.

The series’ of eight episodes each focus on one creative from a range of different disciplines—illustrator Christoph Niemann, graphic designer Paula Scher, photographer Platon, shoe designer Tinker Hatfield, architect Bjarke Ingels, interior designer Ilse Crawford, car designer Ralph Gilles, and stage designer Es Devlin.

“The show is about going inside the minds of some of the greatest designers in the world and unpacking their creative process in a truthful and honest way, in order to show people how the world around them is shaped,” - Dave O’Connor, an executive producer at Radical Media, the series’ production company.

At the end of each episode I felt so inspired and motivated to design and create great work. It was really interesting and reassuring to hear how each of the designers/creatives started out in the industry as talented design students or interns, working their way up the ladder as their work progressed and they became more confident and well established.

I found every episode and discipline really interesting to watch keeping in mind throughout what our tutor John Watters constantly reminds us, that we can do or specialise in whatever we want after university, not just graphic design, as creativity and many of the skills that we learn at university are transferable.

The passion and creativity of each of the designers astounded me and you could feel their energy and love of design through the way they talked about their craft. This has inspired me to not get so hung up on the mark schemes and the idea of grades when designing my work and to just create stuff that motivates me to want to design great work, as the grades would reflect that anyway.
